Sam Altman, the Father of ChatGPT, Welcomes His First Child Amidst Controversies

OpenAI CEO Shares Joyful News of His Newborn / AFP

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI and popularly known as the "father of ChatGPT," recently announced the arrival of his first child, expressing profound joy and excitement. On February 23, 2025, Altman took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to share a heartfelt message, welcoming his baby into the world with the words, "Welcome to the world, little guy," accompanied by a touching photo of the newborn grasping his finger.

In his post, Altman revealed that the baby arrived earlier than expected and will be staying in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for the time being, though he reassured followers that the child's condition is stable. He reflected on the precious moments spent caring for his newborn, stating, "I have never felt such love before," highlighting the deep emotional connection that new parents often experience.

Altman, who is in a same-sex marriage with software engineer Oliver Mulholland, celebrated their union last January in a small, unofficial ceremony in San Francisco. He has openly identified as a member of the LGBTQ+ community and made his first public appearance with Mulholland at a White House dinner in 2023. In an interview with New York Magazine last September, Altman had expressed his and Mulholland's plans to expand their family, sparking interest in how they would welcome their child—whether through adoption or surrogacy remains unclear.

The announcement of Altman's fatherhood has sparked considerable interest in the tech community, with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella extending heartfelt congratulations on X. He noted that becoming a parent is one of the most profound and rewarding experiences in life, wishing Altman and his family a future filled with wonderful moments.

At this pivotal time, Altman's new role as a father coincides with significant developments at OpenAI. The organization announced plans to transition from a nonprofit to a for-profit model in December, which has led to tensions with former co-founder Elon Musk. Musk has publicly criticized OpenAI for straying from its original mission to develop AI for the benefit of humanity, instead pursuing commercial interests. He has even proposed acquiring OpenAI through a consortium of investment funds, a move that the OpenAI board has rejected.

As Altman navigates this new chapter in his personal life, questions remain regarding his plans for parental leave and how his responsibilities at OpenAI will evolve.
